Those interested in a career in firefighting are invited to apply for one of many vacant positions within the St. Clair Township Fire Department.
Chief Richard Boyes said the service has kicked off its annual recruitment of paid, on-call firefighters.
Aside from fires, they'll respond to things like medical assist calls, motor vehicle crashes, or any other emergency needing assistance.
"Right now our primary focus is for the Courtright, Wilkesport and Becher stations," said Boyes. "We do have some vacancies in Brigden, Corunna, and Port Lambton as well. So we're, to a point, looking for people for all stations."
Boyes said applicants must have a valid driver's licence, be over 18 years old, and legally allowed to work in Canada.
He said the department pays for all of the required training.
"Everybody now has to be a certified firefighter, that's the new provincial regulation," he said. "So, the initial commitment is to get trained and that does take a significant amount of time. It's usually spread over the first six to 12 months. Anybody applying should expect that they have to give a fair bit of time to training before they can get to being an actual emergency responder."
Boyes said there will be an aptitude test, and successful applicants will undergo physical fitness testing once they've started the job.
Meanwhile, there's a recruitment information session scheduled for January 18 from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Station 3 in Courtright.
