Smoke alarm alerts neighbour to townhouse fire

Two family pets were lost in a fire Tuesday afternoon in Sarnia.

Firefighters responded to a structure fire at a townhouse complex at the corner of Wellington Street and Murphy Road.

Sarnia Fire and Rescue Fire Prevention Officer John Milne said a neighbour heard the smoke alarm and called 911 just before 4 p.m.

Milne said nobody was home at the time, however a dog and cat both died in the fire.

He said the fire was contained to the living room area, however there was smoke damage throughout the townhouse. He said firefighters were able to get the situation under control quickly, and no adjacent properties were damaged.

Milne said the cause of the blaze is undetermined at this time, and damage is estimated between $50,000 and $75,000.

A GoFundMe has been launched to help a single mom and her two children recover from the loss.

Sarnia Fire and Rescue reminds residents to make sure they have working smoke alarms on each level of their home, and recommends developing and practicing a home fire escape plan.
