Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has closed its investigation into the death of a Sarnia man last fall, as there "was little else the officers could do" to help the 36-year-old in need of medical attention.
Sarnia police were called to a London Road residence on September 12, 2022, about a possible trespassing incident.
The Sarnia man, referred to as the "complainant" in the SIU report, allegedly refused to leave a backyard and appeared to be under the influence of drugs.
He reportedly stumbled onto the roadway and rolled onto the grass before police arrived.
Officers arrived a few minutes later to find the man flailing his limbs and referring to himself as "Satan".
While waiting for an ambulance to arrive, the 36-year-old was placed in a recovery position and officers stood around him to prevent him from rolling onto the road.
He stopped breathing just as paramedics arrived at the scene and was pronounced dead at the hospital, despite life-saving measures such as CPR.
SIU Director Joseph Martino said the officers regarded the man's wellbeing and called for medical attention about two minutes after arriving at the scene.
"Given that the complainant was conscious and active throughout their time together, there was little else the officers could do in the circumstances," read the report.
As a result, the SIU is not proceeding with criminal charges and the file has been closed.
The SIU is a civilian law enforcement agency tasked with investigating incidents of death, serious injury, the discharge of a firearm at a person or an allegation of sexual assault involving an official.
