Student involved in fatal crash sentenced to jail time

A Windsor international student who was behind the wheel during a fatal collision in Lambton County in 2019 has been sentenced to two years in jail.

A sentencing hearing was held Thursday morning for Jovanpreet Singh.

The student from India pleaded guilty last year to three counts of dangerous operation causing death and one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.

Singh was 25 years old at the time of the crash, on October 4, 2019.

The court previously heard that Singh was driving at over 200 kilometres per hour when the vehicle crashed on Oil Heritage Road. Three 19-year-old passengers, who were not wearing seatbelts, were ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

The court confirmed Thursday that Singh was handed a total imprisonment term of two years and eight days, with credit for the eight days of pretrial custody which was already served.

Singh was also handed down a 10-year driving prohibition, a DNA order, and a weapons prohibition for 10 years.
