Survey seeks input on possible Sarnia Transit changes

The City of Sarnia is looking to gauge feedback on potential schedule and route changes to the transit system as ridership experiences a "bounce-back" from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The city has launched a new survey to assess possible improvements.

Some of the questions included in the survey focus on how often residents use public transit, the average length of their trips, and how many buses they need to take in order to get to their destination.

Transit Manager Michelle Carter said the city was planning to launch the survey in 2019 but it was put on hold.

"We're seeing a lot of delays in service due to the exceeding number of passengers we're picking up and it's really hard to keep our current timing routes that have been in place for decades," said Carter.

The city said Sarnia Transit has historically operated based on a 30-minute round-trip timeframe, which is "no longer possible" due to several factors.

Possible solutions outlined by city staff include shifting to a 40-minute schedule, adding more buses and drivers, shortening route lengths, and reducing the number of stops.

The survey will be available online through to January 4, 2023. Carter said printed copies of the survey can also be obtained on buses or by contacting the city's customer service department.
