Sarnia police pay respects to fallen South Simcoe officers

Approximately 35 members of the Sarnia Police Service (SPS) will attend the funeral of two fallen officers in Barrie on Thursday morning.

Cst. Morgan Russell, 54, and Cst. Devon Northrup, 33, were killed last week while responding to a disturbance call in Innisfil.

SPS Chief Derek Davis described policing as "a family" which was why civilian and sworn members of the local service felt the need to offer their condolences.

"What's felt by one member is felt by all members," said Davis. "There isn't a police officer in the SPS who hasn't thought at some point over the last few days... weeks, that that could happen to me, that could happen to my friend, that could happen to my patrol partner."

South Simcoe Police Service said the funeral service is not open to the public but community members can gather at the Innisfil Community Church to watch the broadcast.

The deaths of two South Simcoe officers came shortly after 48-year-old Cst. Andrew Hong was killed in Mississauga.

Most recently, RCMP Cst. Shaelyn Yang, 31, was killed while on duty on Tuesday in Burnaby, B.C.

Davis said it has been "a concerning month" and it's something that will be addressed after Thursday's funeral.

"Our priority right now is to pay our respects and support the families and friends and then after the funeral is over, I think it is certainly time to start asking some questions, as to how are these things happening?"

Davis said the SPS has appreciated the community support received during this past month.
