Lambton Councillors eager to see renovated Heritage Museum

Lambton County Council committee meetings could be hitting the road next term.

During Wednesday's A.M. Committee meeting, Councillor Mike Stark suggested hosting a meeting from the renovated Lambton Heritage Museum, before it's set to open to the public in March.

Stark said he was thoroughly impressed with the photographs from the work that's being done at the museum.

"Not only would we have, I presume, the A.M. committee meeting there but also the P.M. committee so that everybody gets a view of the facility."

The $1.2-million renovation work of the museum's main exhibition and multi-use space began in the spring.

County Cultural Services GM Andrew Meyer believes the county will be able to accommodate Stark's request.

"We have in the past hosted committee at the site, following some substantial renovations from the last phase, so I would welcome the opportunity to do that again."

Stark said when the term started, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, councillors did a bit of a "road show" when it came to committee meetings.

Councillor Steve Arnold believes hosting meetings at the museum could be very beneficial.

"We've done the [Habitat] homes, we have meetings at all of them, and it just gives you a better perspective of what's actually going on that we're responsible for, so I think that's a great suggestion."

Councillors Brad Loosley and Bill Weber also supported the idea. Weber said it will get councillors out to facilities.

"I know we did that a number of years ago back at the Alix Art Gallery in Sarnia, and I think it would be great to have committee meetings at the museum," said Weber. "If you do a tour, a lot of people are busy. If you have a meeting there, they have to attend and they can't attend virtually. So, it'd be good to have everybody together at the site to see what's going on."

Weber also asked the county how many people attended this year's Lambton Fall Colour & Craft Festival, hosted at the museum. Meyer said they don't quite have the final figures from the event.

"Typically, we get about 3,500 people through a year -- this year seemed pretty consistent with that based on the activity at the site. We raised just over $20,000, so we saw similar numbers to past years, so we expect it's going to be around that mark."
