Hundreds now connected to high-speed internet

Over 500 homes and businesses in Lambton County now have access to high-speed internet.

Cogeco announced that 508 locations in Camlachie, Marthaville, and Reeces Corners have been connected.

"As we make these steps, it feels great and [we're] that much closer to having everybody as connected as we can," said Lambton County Warden Kevin Marriott.

He said high-speed internet is an important tool in the rural community, "it's very important for agriculture these days." Marriott also notes there are many other areas of the county waiting to be connected.

"The south part of the county is the least served at this point. But this Cogeco [project area] is a very important area because it was built-up urban area so it gave quite a good number of residences service," Marriott said. "But there is still a hole in the southern third of the county."

The projects were carried out in conjunction with Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada's Universal Broadband Fund Rapid Response program. Through the program, Cogeco was awarded $1.1 million in funding for 12 projects.

Work on the other nine projects is ongoing.
