Affordable housing project delayed

Work on a new affordable housing project in Sarnia has been delayed.

Lambton County Housing Services Department Manager Melisa Johnson said foundation work, at the three storey expansion at Maxwell Park Place, was held up when service issues were identified on site.

"The delays regarding the foundation were uncovered due to the elevation of the water and hydro line, in relation to the elevation of the foundation," said Johnson. "There wasn't enough clearance when the foundation was put in, so we had to look at relocating those water and hydro lines outside of the foundation."

She said construction of the modules was also delayed, due to staffing and supply chain issues, but they're hoping they arrive on site this fall.

"They will use a crane to put the units in place, but then there will be a process to enclose the building, put the roofing on, put the elevator and that kind of stuff in, so I'm not sure of the exact timeline there," said Johnson. "If the modules arrive on site this fall, and occupancy is next March, we could be talking three months or so for that. But, this is our first modular build, so we're kind of new to the process."

Johnson said they have yet to finalize the occupancy list.

"We're looking to start that about six months before our expected occupancy date. So, we will be looking to start those conversations this fall."

The addition at 993 Maxwell Street will include 24-units, six of which will be fully accessible.

Fencing was erected in the area off London Road last November.
