BWH not impacted by province-wide epidural shortage

Bluewater Health is assuring expectant mothers that there's an adequate supply of epidurals at the Sarnia and Petrolia sites.

The hospital has fielded a number of concerns from pregnant women about a provincial shortage of the pain management medication.

Vice President of Clinical Operations Laurie Zimmer said they're keeping a close eye on the situation as it evolves.

"The purchasing and supply teams are confident we can maintain our demand until the end of August when we anticipate the back order issues will subside. Again, we're closely monitoring the situation. We are readily available and in constant contact with our other hospital partners surrounding the situation."

Zimmer said they haven't been contacted by any other hospitals to help out with supply.

She said if the situation locally becomes critical, impacted patients will be notified by Bluewater Health and their maternal care provider.
