The arrest of a suspect on outstanding warrants resulted in a foot pursuit in Sarnia on Thursday.
Members of the Ontario Repeat Offenders Enforcement Squad (ROPE Squad) attended Sarnia to locate a suspect wanted in several jurisdictions, including Sarnia.
Officers located the accused as he was about to enter a taxi in the 800 block of Devine Street.
Sarnia police Cst. John Sottosanti said as officers approached the taxi, the suspect allegedly fled on foot resulting in a foot chase. He said officers spotted the suspect attempting to access a concealed weapon on his person, and a violent struggle ensued.
"Officers were able to complete the arrest of the suspect and secure the scene," said Sottosanti. "Officers recovered a loaded .357 magnum revolver which is a prohibited firearm."
Cst. John Sottosanti said 42-year-old Abbas Kamal Zeidan of Windsor is facing 18 new criminal charges.
"These charges involve everything from possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order, failing to comply with a release order, resisting arrest, assaulting a peace officer, assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, use of a weapon while committing an offence along with other weapon possession charges," said Sottosanti. "He was remanded into custody pending a bail hearing."
