Sarnia police are continuing efforts to keep impaired drivers off of city streets. Officers arrested and charged four of them this past Sunday alone.
Shortly after 1:20 a.m., an officer spotted a vehicle travelling northbound on Christina Street with no headlights while swerving into the southbound lane and nearly striking the police cruiser.
Police said the driver eventually turned northbound, in the wrong direction, on Vidal Street North.
The accused was stopped in the area of Brock Street and Maria Street. The 36-year-old woman from St. Thomas failed a roadside screening device and then allegedly blew over twice the legal limit at police headquarters.
Just prior to 3 a.m., another officer on patrol in the downtown core observed a vehicle travelling northbound on Christina Street at a high rate of speed.
The vehicle was stopped by police after it turned east onto Lochiel Street. After speaking with the 22-year-old male driver, the officer detected the smell of alcohol and issued a roadside breath demand, which the driver allegedly refused to provide.
The accused was arrested and charged with Refusing to Comply with a Breath Demand.
Just after 3 p.m., a concerned citizen called police to report an erratic driver speeding southbound on Christina Street from Lakeshore Road, swerving all over the road and mounting the curb.
Police located the vehicle in the area of Maxwell Street and Napier Street and saw it pull into a driveway in the 300 block of Elgin Street.
It's alleged the 44-year-old female driver exited the vehicle was and was attempting to hide from police by squatting in front of the car. The accused failed to comply with a breath demand and was arrested.
Later that evening, shortly after 8 p.m., a 56-year-old female driver struck a vehicle on Durand Street and then returned to her residence on the same street.
A witness followed her home and called police. She allegedly blew over twice the legal limit at police headquarters.
All drivers had their vehicles towed and impounded for seven days.
They were each served an automatic 90-day driver’s licence suspension and they will have to attend court at a later date to answer to the charges.
The Sarnia Police Service is reminding everyone that impaired driving puts everyone’s life at risk. We're urged to plan ahead and drink responsibly and never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
