The Inn of the Good Shepherd's Mobile Market is back for another year, providing fresh local produce to families in need across Sarnia-Lambton.
Executive Director Myles Vanni said this year, they're visiting 14 locations around the county each week.
"Eating healthy is so important and, in today's market, it's even more expensive," said Vanni. "Being able to provide folks with fresh, healthy vegetables is good for them. It's good for their health, and helping stretch out their dollars a bit."
He said the market is typically well attended.
"Typically, we'll see about 1,000 people access the Mobile Market every week, families, kids and such," he said. "That translates to almost 6,000 pounds of fresh vegetables and fruit each week."
Vanni said their After the Bell snack pack program is also returning.
With support from Noelle’s Gift and Food Banks Canada, they'll offer children's snack packs, containing 24 items, at each market location.
He said the market wouldn't be possible without support from lead sponsor Pembina Pipelines, local farmers, greenhouse owners, and home gardeners who donate their products.
Lambton Public Health, Canadian Mental Health Association, North Lambton Community Health Clinic, and Ontario Early Years will all be on hand to share resources about healthy living.
To be eligible, residents must have a food bank client card, social assistance income statement, old age supplement income statement, or proof they are in assisted housing.
The market starts the week of July 4 and goes until mid-November.
