Finch Drive 'road-diet' approved

Sarnia council gave the green light to implement a permanent "road-diet" on Finch Drive Monday, despite being urged by one councillor to pump the brakes.

Councillor Bill Dennis felt it was important that the public be consulted first.

"People's opinions change over time, that's why we have elections every four years," Dennis said. "We can't assume people feel the same as yesterday, and if the response I am receiving is any indication, the public is not receptive to this at this time. I realize it will extend the timeline, but I would hate to make the assumption that is currently wrong."

Traffic will be reduced from four lanes to a single lane in each direction from Wellington Street to London Road and bicycle lanes would be included from Wellington to Fanshawe Drive.

The changes are expected to cost about $50,000 and would be accommodated within the current transportation master plan and streetscape budget.

Staff had hoped to implement the changes as quickly as possible.
