Cross-border truckers upset with rule breakers on Hwy. 402

A cross-border truck driver believes there needs to be increased law enforcement on the Highway 402 approaching the Blue Water Bridge.

Sal the Trucker said the stretch of highway in Sarnia sees many truck drivers disobey the rules of the road by speeding and using lanes designed for passenger vehicles.

Sal said he speaks with a number of other truckers daily, over the CB radio, that voice the same concerns. He said issues arise when things are backed up and the wait is long.

"That's when some truck drivers decide 'well, I don't want to wait two-and-a-half hours to cross the border. I can just run the local lane and drive as far up as I possibly can and save time.'"

Sal has been crossing the Blue Water Bridge for the last 20 years and daily since 2018. He said the lack of enforcement near the bridge has turned the area into a free-for-all.

"All truck drivers, not just some, all truck drivers should follow the rules of the road for things to be equal amongst truck drivers and for safety issues."

Sal said motorists in Sarnia can be impacted as well.

"There are truck drivers who decide, for example, who will get off the highway and cut through Sarnia and get back on at Front Street. That's not cool too."

Lambton OPP have reported multiple collisions involving transports on the stretch of highway. A few examples include a crash from April of this year, another that took place in November of last year and third from March, 2021.

Sal said a lot of truckers have no respect for the rule of law or other truck drivers.

"Nowadays it's all about 'me, me, me.' There is no more brotherhood of truck drivers right now and it's a very sad situation that a lot of us are in."

Sal said increased enforcement would lead to safer roads.
