Petrolia launches Parks Passport initiative

The Town of Petrolia is hoping to see more residents outdoors and is offering an incentive geared toward children.

Director of Community Services and Facilities Dave Menzies said they wanted to promote outdoor activity with the launch of its Parks Passport. It includes different parks and trails in Petrolia and in some cases, asks participants to submit a drawing of their outing.

"Utilizing the outdoor space kind of dropped off during COVID-19 and then picked back up again and the momentum is strong for people to get out and get some fresh air and enjoy the parks and use the trails," said Menzies. "So it's the perfect time to launch this type of program."

Children who return a completed Parks Passport to the Petrolia Municipal Office will receive a prize but specifics are being kept secret.

Although the prizes are just for youth members, Menzies said the initiative is open to all residents.

"We encourage all the residents to come pick one up, learn about the parks, learn about wetlands, see the trails, and just enjoy this beautiful weather we're having," he said.

Parks Passports will be available to pick up at the Petrolia Municipal Office from Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. They will also be available at the Petrolia Farmers’ Market, located at 396 Fletcher St., every Saturday from 7:30 a.m. until 12 p.m., starting on May 21.
