Son inspires Sarnia dad to help out in Ukraine

A Sarnia man is risking his life to help Ukraine under attack by Russia.

David Gillan said he has been assisting with logistics and providing aid and support for Ukrainian troops since arriving in early March.

"Travelling to and from locations, with food, ammo, just general support, that's been my main job since we got deployed," said Gillan.

The 33-year-old was inspired to go to the country under attack by Russia, following a conversation with his son.

"Basically I was following the war, and I was talking with my son and I asked him, 'what do you do when someone asks to be your friend and someone bullies them?' and he said stand up for them," said Gillan. "And then the next day, they shot a missile into a school. I bought the ticket that night and I left the next day."

Gillan said he intends to stay as long as he's needed.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine which began February 24 has caused Europe's largest refugee crisis since World War II.

Over 5.7 million Ukrainians have fled the country.
