After competing in the Lambton County Science Fair, five local students will participate in a national event in May.
The local science fair was held at the Dante Club in Sarnia on April 10. Fifty students registered 41 projects for the in-person science fair.
"I think the students and the parents were all very positive about the fact that we were back to an in-person event," said Media Coordinator Peter Smith.
He said there was a wide array of projects from students ranging between Grade 3 and Grade 12. Many of the projects from older students revolved around medicine and the environment. Smith described them as being "quite advanced".
Annabelle Rayson won the Best of Fair award for her project "Plankton Wars: An Innovative Analysis of Daphnia Genotype Biomanipulation for Algae Bloom Prevention." Rayson won an award during last year's national science fair.
Rayson along with Kiran Prasad and Arushi Rawat, Krish Modi, and Safia Deol have been chosen to participate at the 2022 Canada-Wide Science Fair, beginning May 16.
Smith said although the science fair will be held virtually, it's a great event for local students to take part in.
"We've got expectations, I think, that some of them are going to come back with prizes from that as well," he said.
Organizers hope to rebuild attendance to pre-COVID levels during the 2023 Lambton County Science Fair.
"We're hoping that we can really get back to the kind of fairs that we did in past years and get back to our home, which is Lambton College," Smith said.
