Cyclone Aid food drive celebrates 20 years

St. Patrick's High School students are hoping to help the Inn of the Good Shepherd food bank fill its shelves.

It's the 20th annual Cyclone Aid this weekend.

The annual food drive will be done differently again, as students are still not permitted to canvass door-to-door.

Teacher Martina Austin said students and staff will be stationed at St. Patrick's High School, the Real Canadian Superstore on Murphy Road, and Foodland in Bright's Grove on Saturday, April 9.

"If you are just coming to the grocery store or St. Pat's with your donations already in hand, then we'll have staff and students available to just simply pop it out of your truck and grab it so that you can go quickly on your way," said Austin. "In addition to that, both grocery stores have prepared packages that people can buy, and then simply donate to the inn at the grocery store."

Austin said in the past they've collected about 28,000 pounds of food for the inn.

"I'm glad we can do something a little bit different and something a bit on the special side to mark the anniversary," she said. But, we're really hoping that next year, everything is back to normal and the kids can just go door-to-door. That really means a lot to them, and I know that they're missing that component, but they're really excited to do at least this."

Donations can be dropped off from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m.
