Request to charge parking fees at summer music festival denied

Sarnia council has denied a request by the organizers of the Revelree Music Festival to charge parking fees in Canatara Park.

The group had asked for permission to set up volunteers to collect the funds to park at the beach lots and at the animal farm.

Councillor Mike Stark couldn't support it.

"The purpose of Canatara Park is to be enjoyed by all of the citizens of the City of Sarnia, with particular emphasis on people who can not afford to pay for entertainment venues," said Stark. "This was the original intent of Canatara Park and this proposal goes completely against that sentiment."

Councillor Brian White agreed.

"I can not support shutting down so much parking for the active and free users of such a large park," said White. " There's much more that's going to be going on during this festival that should be open and available to general users of the park."

The festival, to be held July 22 and 23, will feature local artists on the Friday night.

Saturday’s lineup features Sarnia’s own Donovan Woods, Blue Rodeo, Big Wreck, Bedouin Soundclash and Texas King, as well as American favourites Red Wanting Blue.
