Thornton makes 30 saves, Sting shut out Greyhounds

The Sarnia Sting wrapped up an eight game home stand with a 4-0 win over the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds Wednesday night.

Goaltender Anson Thornton turned away 30 shots in the win, his second in two nights, and forward Max Namestnikov had a pair of goals.

A scoreless first period saw the visiting Greyhounds outshoot Sarnia eight to three.  At the 5:43 mark, a panel of glass was shattered when Sting defenceman Owen MacDonald hit the Soo's Kalvyn Watson near Sarnia's blueline, leading to a brief delay.

Namestnikov opened the scoring at 1:01 of the second period on a goal set up by Theo Hill and Marko Sikic.  Ethan Ritchie made in 2-0 Sarnia with a wrist shot from the blueline at 15:13.

In the third period, Namestnikov increased Sarnia's lead to three with a power play goal at 4:42.  Theo Hill had another assist on the goal, his third of the game -- in eight games this month, Hill has recorded two goals and 13 assists.  Angus MacDonell scored an unassisted, shorthanded goal at 6:37 to cap-off the 4-0 win.

"That [win] definitely shows that we can compete with anyone," said MacDonell.  "[The Greyhounds] are a top team in our division and we're obviously looking to ramp up and get some momentum going into the playoffs, so it's huge to get back-to-back wins against two top teams here."

The Sting beat the Spitfires 4-3 Tuesday night and the club went 5-3 over their two week stint at the Hive.

Sarnia is back in action Friday night in Guelph -- coverage on CHOK (1070 AM/103.9 FM) begins at 7 p.m.
