An investigation into Warwick's mayor has found that her actions and comments regarding the “Freedom Convoy” did not contravene the township's code of conduct or social media policy.
Warwick council members unanimously voted to launch an investigation in February following accusations that the mayor's comments and failure to denounce the Highway 402 demonstration reflected poorly on the community.
The integrity commissioner said he reviewed correspondence related to the participation by Mayor Jackie Rombouts in the convoy protest.
"The vast majority of the emails and posts are adamantly against the mayor’s attendance at the protest and her supportive comments to the media," read the letter.
"While I readily agree that making these statements is inappropriate behaviour as a mayor and likely to lead to the wrong conclusion by the public, I must preserve freedom of expression for any member of council."
The letter also stated that council could seek legal advice on possible actions it can take if it wishes to pursue the matter further. However, during its meeting this week, council agreed to consider the issue resolved and move "forward together".
Rombouts had previously welcomed the investigation and said she tried to make it clear that her opinions are her own and do not represent the views of Warwick Township as a whole.
Sarnia News Today reached out to Swayze for a statement but was told "no comment".
