Sarnia's mayor says current COVID-19 regulations at Canada-U.S. land border crossings are "unneeded and unnecessary."
Mike Bradley and other border mayors from across Canada have again written to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to end all COVID testing requirements for fully vaccinated travellers.
This follows a Zoom meeting with group members last week.
The letter said the testing guidelines are not justified by current science and are out of line with public health officers' mandates.
"A really good example is that 20,000 people could go Wednesday night to the Air Canada Centre and watch the Leafs game," said Bradley. "There was no testing there, there were no requirements beyond the masking. Yet, why do you continue to do this at the border when we know it's not going to prevent any further spread of the disease? These requirements create an unnecessary cost to people, and they need to review them now. The government has said they're going to review them at the end of March but that's way too late."
The letter said “border communities have been at the forefront of the federal strategy and have paid a heavy price with the land border being closed to all but essential travel for 20 months."
It read that “border communities have suffered greatly during this pandemic and that the government acted quickly to put these measures in place, and must act quickly to remove them in these early days of March.”
Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos has repeatedly said border requirements are constantly under review.
