Sarnia council briefs

Sarnia council has accepted an amended lease agreement for Chris Hadfield Airport.

The new agreement with Scottsdale Aviation Inc. will expire July 1, 2022.

The extension will provide time to address Regional Air Transportation Initiative (RATI) projects, complete the airport master plan, advance the approved 2022 capital projects and continue work in an attempt to secure a new airline service for the community.

Huron Flight Services has Sarnia council's permission to operate an aircraft at the Andrew S. Brandt Marina at Sarnia Bay this year.

The seaplane is expected to begin operations in mid-April and only operate during daylight hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Sarnia council has accepted a $6 million tender for construction of oversize load corridor dock at the end of Exmouth Street.

Bronte Construction submitted the lowest of nine bids.

Cestar College fulfilled its generous $4 million dollar donation toward construction of the corridor last week.

A $1 million dollar proposal to replace the roofing system over the main rink area at Progressive Auto Sales Arena has been awarded.

The job will be done by Flynn Canada Ltd.

-------------------------

Council did not award a nearly $250,000 proposal to The Planning Partnership for the Development Area 2 Secondary Plan Update.

Staff had recommended it be inherited by the consultant, which resulted in the expressed concern from many councillors that there was no bidding for the project.

The project will be opened to the tender process.

---------------------------------

City staff have been asked to reassert ownership and plan for future capital projects to upgrade the shoreline and install a multi-use path along a section of Old Lakeshore Road.

Specific recommendations will be provided at a future council meeting.

Property owners along the right of way, between Cull Drain and Mike Weir Park, will be given notice of the plan in advance so they have an opportunity to speak to the recommendations if they wish.

Staff have also been asked to report back with a cost benefit analysis for any projects planned.

---------------------------------

A stretch of Indian Road is about to be thinned.

A road diet will be implemented from Michigan Avenue to Lakeshore Road, curb bump outs will be installed at the intersection of Cathcart Boulevard and Murphy Road and bike and parking lanes will also be designated on Cathcart Boulevard.

---------------------------------------------

Sarnia council has tabled the idea of holding a public design competition for welcome signs to be featured in the centre island of the Rapids Parkway roundabout.

The design of the extension will include a roundabout at the intersection of Quinn Drive.

The Sarnia Historical Society had offered to provide up to three cash prizes of $1,000 each.

The idea will be revisited two years after the project is completed.
