Shell is working to bring its Sarnia Manufacturing Centre in Corunna back in service following what the company is calling a "multi-unit" upset at around 9:25 p.m. Thursday.
In a message delivered through the My Community Notification Network, the company said the emergency operations centre (EOC) was activated as a precaution.
"The EOC has since been stood down, and we have transitioned into a strategic and supportive approach to returning the units to service," the notice read.
Shell said the situation "continues to be well managed."
"As we work to return the units to service, nearby neighbours may again notice increased flaring and associated increased noise level for the next eight to 12 hours. We recognize this can be upsetting for you as our neighbours and ask for your continued patience and understanding, knowing that the flare system is an important process safety device at the refinery, and that occasional flaring is a normal and vital part of keeping the refinery safe during unit restart activities and unplanned operational disruptions."
Shell said the Spills Action Centre (SAC) and Community Awareness Emergency Response were notified.
