Sting top Rangers in shootout

Sting goaltender Ben Gaudreau made 48 saves and Ty Voit scored the shootout winner in Sarnia's 4-3 victory in Kitchener Tuesday night.

Nolan Burke had a goal and an assist for Sarnia, Austin Harper scored his first OHL goal and Marko Sikic also scored in the shootout in another road win for the Sting.

Rangers forward Reid Valade opened the scoring 53 seconds into the game, his 15th of the season.  Sarnia evened the score at 1-1 with a highlight-reel goal from Harper -- the Wyoming native created a turnover in his own end, streaked up the ice and backhanded the puck below the crossbar at 6:57.

The second period remained scoreless until the final minute of play when Burke tipped in a point shot from Andrei Malyavin at 19:05.  Burke's team-leading 24th goal of the season gave Sarnia a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.

Max Namestnikov made it 3-1 Sarnia with a powerplay marker at 11:52, his sixth goal of the season.  However, the Rangers would respond with two goals in the final six minutes of play, including the tying goal from Mitchell Martin at 19:07.  Kitchener outshot Sarnia 18-6 in the final frame, 4-0 in overtime and 51-27 overall.

The first round of the shootout saw Valade and Burke come up empty.  In round two, Carson Rehkopf converted for the Rangers and Sikic scored for the Sting.  Mike Petizian, Kitchener's next shooter, was turned away by Gaudreau in the third round, setting the stage for Voit to fire home the shootout-winner.

The win improves the Sting's record to 17-18-3-1 on the season.  The club is 12-7-1-0 on the road.

Sarnia hosts Kitchener Friday night at 7:05 p.m.
