Sarnia council briefs

A site plan application for the development of an eight storey, 161 unit, residential development at the former Bayside Centre has been received.

City staff reported that Urban Solutions Planning and Development Consultants Inc. has submitted the document on behalf of Seasons Retirement Communities.

The high rise will be built on the southern portion of the lands at Vidal Street North and Cromwell Street.

In addition to the residential units, the plan includes retail space and close to 180 parking spaces.

Sarnia council has endorsed a motion from the Town of Aurora to dissolve the Ontario Land Tribunal, formerly known as the Ontario Municipal Board.

The move is hoped to eliminate a significant source of red tape delaying the development of more housing in Ontario.

"We're the only jurisdiction in North America that has a body above local decision making," Mayor Mike Bradley said during the meeting.

Bradley said the decision would ensure the local council does the decision making.

"I've just seen too many things over the years that they automatically delay anything, you know, for two years, sometimes longer and it's a very expensive process."

Bradley said objections could still be heard at the divisional court.

A resolution to repeal a bill which caps pay increases for nurses at one per cent per year was endorsed by city council.

The City of Brampton is calling on the Ontario government to get rid of Bill 124.

The move is believed to be a necessary step to ending the nursing shortage in the province.

City council has endorsed a resolution passed by Fort Erie requesting molecular testing to re-enter Canada be scrapped.

Sarnia council will support the call for the federal government to discontinue the requirement at land ports of entry along the Canada- U.S. border.

Sarnia council is requesting an update on the history, plans and status of sewer separation in the city.

A lot of work has been done over the recent years towards the relief of basement flooding.

Sarnia council has asked staff to finalize negotiations with the Lambton Kent District School Board for a new lease agreement for the five acres of land next to Mike Weir Park.

The land has been leased to the city for 36 years and sub-leased to the Sarnia Cricket Club since 1987.

One of the terms under the new agreement is that the land be available for use by the whole community.

A new small pavilion, with a storage space and viewing area was constructed with city funds in 2019.

Sarnia council has decided to suspend the activities of advisory committees after nomination day.

The action aligns with a previous decision not to hold council meetings between August 19, 2022 and the municipal election day, October 24, 2022.

Council meetings will only be held in the event of an emergency during this time.

The current term of council expires November 14, 2022.

A revised policy for the use of municipal resources for election purposes has been adopted.

Rather than banning the use of city parks or facilities, council has decided to allow the use of city property for events where all candidates are invited to attend with the clerks approval.

A recommendation to restrict parking on Lake Chipican Drive in Canatara Park has been defeated.

Council expressed concerns about additional signage and spoiling the fun for others who've recently been enjoying winter activities like skating on Lake Chipican.

City staff have shared exciting news that they've successfully secured a grant of nearly $32,000 for the revitalization of Avondale Park.

The park, at the corner of Brock Street North and Davis Street, is on the edge of both the Mitton Village and Sarnia's downtown.

The Sarnia native Friendship Centre wants to expand its programming in the park to continue to connect with area residents and nearby businesses.

A community garden was established in the park in recent years.
