A man from Newfoundland is facing impaired driving charges after allegedly smashing into a pole and leaving a smoking vehicle in Sarnia's Chemical Valley Saturday night.
At around 10 p.m., city police were called to a collision in the area of Vidal Street and Churchill Road. When officers arrived on scene, they noticed debris at the intersection of Tashmoo Avenue and Churchill Road, which included a bumper on the roadway.
Police then spotted a smoking vehicle with its front airbags deployed and extensive damage to its front end. No one was in the vehicle, but a male walking eastbound on Churchill Road away from the scene was arrested and charged.
The suspect was then transported back to police headquarters for a breath test, which he refused. As a result of the investigation, the 49-year-old was charged with operation while impaired, failure to comply with demand, and failure to stop after an accident.
Police said the suspect was also allegedly involved in a hit-and-run collision earlier in the evening where a parked car was struck in the area of Mitton Street and George Street.
The man has received a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension along with his vehicle being impounded for seven days. He has a court date set for next month.
