Police locate, arrest sledge axe-wielding man

Sarnia police have located and arrested a man accused of smashing up an underground parking garage with a sledge axe before making off with a bike from the site.

On January 25, police released photos of the suspect wielding a splitting maul at an apartment complex Sunday, January 16.  The man allegedly destroyed a number of security cameras, smashed the door to the storage room and stole a mountain bike.

Police said security images identified the suspect as a 32-year-old man of no local fixed address.

At around 8 a.m. Sunday, January 30 an officer on general patrol saw the accused in the area of Afton Drive. The suspect was taken into custody following a brief foot chase.

The accused is charged with break and enter, two counts of mischief under $5,000, and theft under $5,000.  He was also wanted on an outstanding warrant for break and enter, mischief under $5,000, and breach of probation regarding another incident.

The suspect is set to appear in court next month.
