Top three sites named for multi-use recreation facility

Plans for a new indoor multi-use recreation facility will be discussed by Sarnia council again Monday.

Mayor Mike Bradley said a draft feasibility study has been completed.

"There was tremendous input at the last stage of this planning," said Bradley. "Over 820 responses, 25 user groups were involved in the discussion and now they've focused on a number of locations. Looking at over ten sites across the community. The Bluewater Gymnastics/Sarnia Girls Soccer is on the list, Germain Park is on the list and the Research Park lands are the top three."

Bradley said it's clear some lands would be more appropriate than others.

"The Research Park lands for example are not serviced, so there's a fairly heavy cost there, (at) Lottie Neely (Park) there needs to be discussions with girls soccer and the gymnastics group about how this would fit with their particular facilities, and Germain Park is getting a lot of attention lately, because we've got money now for a gymnasium at the Strangway Centre and we're receiving money to upgrade the pool."

Bradley said council will consider advancing the draft to the final phase of public consultation.

"Then we can start to look at how you finance it and what's going to be in that centre. The public was quite specific with what they wanted. They wanted to see an indoor track, they wanted to see batting cages and other facilities that aren't really available in the community today."

If advanced, a final report and recommendation is expected to be brought forward for council's consideration at the February 28 meeting.
