Cocaine, weapon seizures highlight CBSA 2021 recap

The Canada Border Services Agency has released its annual operational and enforcement highlights, covering the first 10 months of 2021.

In the Southern Ontario region, which includes the Blue Water Bridge, 2,620,820 trucks were processed.

Officers confiscated a total of 674.29 kilograms of narcotics, 244,348 kilograms of tobacco, worth $44.3 million, and $765,334 in undeclared currency.

A total of 166 firearms were seized from January 1 to October 31, not including 56 firearms at the Blue Water Bridge on November 1.

There was a $3.5 million cocaine bust at the Blue Water Bridge on March 31, where a 25-year-old Brampton man was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Officers also confiscated 145 kilograms of cocaine at the Blue Water Bridge during separate incidents on August 9 and 31.

Across Canada, border restrictions caused traveller volumes to drop by nearly 86 per cent compared to pre-pandemic volumes.

Around 97.4 million travellers crossed the border in 2019, compared to about 13.6 million in the first 10 months of 2021.
