Two alleged impaired drivers arrested in separate crashes

Sarnia police responded to two crashes on Wednesday afternoon, each involving a possible impaired driver.

At around 1:30 p.m., police received a complaint of a pickup truck being driven erratically in the area of Exmouth Street and East Street. It's alleged the driver was all over the road and failed to stop at a number of red lights.

Police said the truck was then involved in a hit and run crash at Russell Street and Maria Street, and a witness was able to track it to a home in the 800 block of Wellington Street.

Officers arrived, and determined the truck and its licence plates were stolen.

A 40-year-old Sarnia man is charged with two counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 and one count of operating a conveyance while impaired by drugs.

At around 9:30 p.m. a pickup was heading southbound on Vidal Street, toward Campbell Street, when the driver lost control.

The vehicle mounted the curb, struck a light standard, continued across a front lawn and came to rest against a tree.

The male driver was taken to hospital for evaluation, and police allegedly found open cans of alcohol in the vehicle.

It's alleged the driver refused to provide a breath or blood sample to test for impairment.

The 35-year-old Sarnia man is charged with one count of refusing to comply with a demand.

Both individuals face a 90 day drivers licence suspension.
