Former Sarnia fire chief stepping in to help St. Clair Township

St. Clair Township is relying on the experience of a former Sarnia fire chief until they hire a new one.

Mayor Steve Arnold said a familiar face will oversee the department.

"Through the Fire Marshal's Office, they require that we have an interim fire chief, so we're fortunate enough to have past chief Richard Boyes come on board with us to help us out for the next four to six weeks," said Arnold.

Boyes served as Sarnia's fire chief from 1997 to 2005 and was the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs Board President from 2000 to 2011.

"He's got a tremendous amount of experience both locally and provincially, so it's a great thing for us to have him here and he'll help us with the hiring process as well, I'm sure."

Walt Anderson tendered his retirement papers in September.

Arnold said they've had a good response to the job posting.

"We have a number of applications already in, so we'll have lots to choose from and it will be a great process to get completed."

The position oversees 180 volunteer firefighters and two full-time deputy chiefs.

St. Clair Township has six fire stations and its emergency services headquarters is shared with Lambton OPP in a building on Lyndoch Street in Corunna.
