Large Shell vessel move will cause road closures, power outages

Traffic delays, road closures, and power outages are expected this weekend as a large vessel is moved from the Port of Sarnia to Shell's Manufacturing Centre.

The $3 million piece of equipment is a key component in the processing of oil into fuel.

It's 70 feet long, 25.8 feet wide, 33 feet high, and weighs 632,000 pounds.

Shell Project Lead Kris Mandeville said it replaces an existing vessel in a unit that will be taken down for maintenance during the 2022 turnaround.

"We've been working with Mammoet in terms of the logistics planning for well over two years now," said Mandeville. "So, there are some police escorts involved, as well as some temporary road closures and power outages. There are signs out there now, and we're trying to give the community as much time as possible to prepare for the night of the shipment."

The move gets underway at around noon on Saturday, and will take the following route:

- Seaway Road in Sarnia, to Harbour Road North, - East on Exmouth Street to Murphy Road, - South on Murphy Road to Confederation Line, - East on Confederation Line to Blackwell Side Road, requiring a temporary road closure, - South on Blackwell Side Road to Churchill Line, - West on Churchill Line to Kimball Road, - South on Kimball Road to Petrolia line, requiring a temporary road closure, - East on Petrolia Line/Hill Street, and finally - North on St. Clair Parkway to the Shell site.

Road closures will be in place on Confederation Line, between Highway 40 and Blackwell Side Road, and on Kimball Road from Plank Road to Petrolia Line.

Hydro One said the power outage will be in effect in St. Clair Township from around 11 p.m. Saturday until 3 a.m. Sunday, and will impact about 2,200 customers.
