A Quebec man, now facing drug trafficking charges, was tasered by Sarnia police after allegedly resisting arrest following a traffic stop.
As part of an ongoing investigation, the service's COPPS Unit pulled over a vehicle in the area of Wellington Street and Front Street. When officers approached the vehicle, an eight-inch butcher's knife was spotted on the ground within easy access.
Police asked the two occupants to step out of the vehicle, to ensure everyone's safety. The occupants were also informed that they were to be placed under arrest for possession of a dangerous weapon, until officers could investigate the matter further.
Police said the driver remained cooperative and was handcuffed without incident. The passenger, however, began to struggle while being placed under arrest, leading to the suspect being tasered by police.
During the struggle, police said the man kept reaching for his waistband, which initially raised concerns of a possible weapon. A search of the suspect located 4.5 grams of suspected fentanyl with an approximate street value of $2,250, a digital scale and $2,265 in cash.
The suspect, who gave police a fake name, was identified as 51-year-old Frank Honbong. On top of drug trafficking, he's also charged with resisting a peace officer and public mischief.
Honbong was being held for a bail hearing Wednesday.
