Busy Labour Day weekend for local police

The final long weekend of the summer was a busy one for Ontario Provincial Police in Grand Bend.

Officers laid 50 charges for various offences in the Lake Huron resort community.

Lambton OPP Cst. Jamie Bydeley said charges included two impaired drivers and 41 offences under the Liquor Licence Act.

"Many infractions there," said Bydeley. "People drinking on the beach or consuming alcohol up and down the Grand Bend strip, on the sidewalks there."

He said over the summer, the Lake Huron resort community has seen up to 35,000 visitors a day.

"Typically the Labour Day long weekend is the grand finale of the summer, with people celebrating so we do expect the numbers to start to dwindle there in the village."

Sarnia police handled a total of 331 calls for service over the Labour Day weekend, including 31 domestic and family disputes, a dozen thefts and 11 motor vehicle crashes.

Officers also conducted 36 welfare and wellbeing checks over the three days.
