New charitable group donates $6K to Sexual Assault Survivors Centre

A new charitable organization in Sarnia-Lambton is off to a great start.

The inaugural Guardian Angels Golf Tournament, held at Petrolia's Kingswell Glen Golf Course August 14, raised $6,000 for the Sarnia Sexual Assault Survivors' Centre (SASC).

Angels Secretary Bob Maniuk said representatives from SASC, Trish Vanoosterom and Chantal Butterfield, were recently presented with a cheque.

"I tell you what, they were very moved when we made that donation.  How they would use that... it'll be for helping victims and also doing education in schools and around the community."

Bob said the event featured 21 teams and was the brainchild of his brother, Angels Chairman John Maniuk.

"He wanted to do a golf tournament as a fundraiser to help kids out, and then when my sisters got involved they were talking about kids who are being trafficked, and then we did some research and found the Sexual Assault Survivors Centre."

Bob said the golf tournament, the first initiative put on by the Guardian Angels, will be an annual event.

"We have discussed other events, but we're thinking that probably nothing in the first year and then we'll start exploring other events to compliment the golf tournament next year."

The 2nd Annual Guardian Angels Golf Tournament will take place August 13, 2022 at Kingswell Glen.

SASC educates and advocates with the goal of ending violence against women and children, working with men and women survivors of childhood sexual abuse, sexual assault victims, and human trafficking victims.
