Sarnia's traditional Labour Day Parade has been cancelled once again.
The Sarnia and District Labour Council announced the cancellation of the event earlier this week, citing provincial health restrictions.
President Jason McMichael said council is now looking at rescheduling the 119th installment of the event.
"We like to consider that we're going to delay it because it is the longest running Labour Day parade in Canada. We don't have a new date yet, but we're certainly going to do something to celebrate workers as soon as we can do so safely," he said. "It was really important to the labour leaders that we not risk or compromise public health."
McMichael said council would prefer to do the event in person but are considering all options.
He added that Labour Day is an important day to recognize.
"Since the pandemic began, it's really highlighted how workers put themselves out there, the frontline workers -- everyone from grocery store clerks to medical staff -- the folks who kept our country running through this pandemic. It's so important to recognize what they've gone through," he said. "Their struggles, their losses and their gains, and recognize that this is the one day we come together each year, and like I said, we intend to do so in the near future."
