Copper theft knocks out power to Eastland Plaza

Thieves targeted the Eastland Plaza Wednesday night, removed copper cables and triggered a power outage.

Bluewater Power President and CEO Janice McMichael-Dennis said the outage at the Indian Road plaza was reported at around midnight.

"The cause has been determined to be thieves attacking the infrastructure, stripping the infrastructure for the metal value," said McMichael-Dennis. "It actually caused smoke and that was reported to us along with our notification of issues at the plaza."

Sarnia Fire and Rescue also responded.

McMichael-Dennis said damage and repairs are estimated at about $10,000.

"They cut through razor fence wiring, which in and of itself is a bit of a trick, and then dug into where it's coming out of the ground. It's a potentially deadly activity, but they dug into it, and pulled it out. We really worry about copper theft. The risk is just not worth the reward. It's a very, very dangerous game and we really worry about the eventual outcome when we see things like this happening."

Power at the plaza was interrupted for about 12 hours while crews made repairs.

McMichael-Dennis said city police are investigating the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sarnia police at 519-344-8861 extension 0, or Sarnia-Lambton Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
