Safe space for local youth reopens to the public

A safe space for Sarnia-Lambton's youth reopened its doors on Monday after being closed to the public for nearly a year and a half due to the pandemic.

The Hub, operated by Sarnia-Lambton Rebound, provides services to at-risk or homeless youth between the ages of 12 and 24.

Executive Director Carrie McEachran is excited to welcome those in need once again.

"All of our community partners are going to be back on site," said McEachran. "We're excited this week that the Canadian Mental Health Association is going to be on site, and we're going to have harm reduction on site. So, all of our partners are stepping up, and they're excited to be back at the site offering their support as well."

Over the past 18 months, McEachran said they helped 98 youth on a regular basis but they were limited to virtual appointments and emergency in-person services.

McEachran said there are no capacity limits at the time, and said if there's overflow they'll be able to meet with youth outdoors.

She said during the closure, staff were able to complete some renovations to make the space more youth-friendly.

The Hub is located at 350 Indian Road South, within St. Luke's United Church.
