The sky's the limit for new Rotary Club fundraiser

The Rotary Club of Sarnia has launched a new fundraiser, and it's aiming for the skies.

The club is hosting an environmentally friendly, virtual balloon race.

Spokesperson Rick Marsh said you can pick your balloon for $10 and sign up through the Rotary Club's website.

"The computer program behind everything basically takes the weather pattern, the shape of your balloon, how much helium you put in it, the thickness of the balloon and starts determining how well it's going to travel," said Marsh. "So where's your balloon going to end up, could it be Ottawa, Toronto? The race lasts seven days and you can check on your balloon on any device, anytime you want."

Marsh said the idea has been very popular in parts of Europe and the UK, and the club is pleased to be able to bring the fun to Sarnia-Lambton.

The virtual race takes off on Saturday, July 24 at 6 p.m., and wraps up on Saturday, July 31.

Money raised will help support local charities including Pathways Health Centre for Children, St. Joseph's Hospice and Community Living.

Registration is $10. To sign up, click here.
