Sarnia council briefs

Sarnia council has approved a new multi-use path that connects the Howard Watson Nature Trail to the Maria Street bike route.

The route will see a new path built from Germain Park through to Maria Street.

Parking on the west side of Russell Street, between London Road and Maria Street, will also be modified to accommodate a bike lane extension to Capel Street and Colborne Road.

Construction will begin in late summer or early fall.

It's expected the $450,000 project will be completed and ready for use by next spring.

A basement flooding grant program is being implemented.

The program will assist homeowners with the costs of installing an approved backwater valve, the disconnection of foundation drains and installation of a sump pump.

Sarnia's program will reimburse homeowners for 75 per cent of the eligible costs, up to a maximum $1,000, to install an approved backwater valve.

90 per cent of the eligible costs, up to a maximum of $4,000, will be offered for the disconnection of foundation drains and sump pump installation.

Because of multiple significant rain events in the city last year, the program is retroactive from January 1, 2020.

The measures are hoped to mitigate the risks of basement flooding and reduce inflow and infiltration into the city's sanitary sewer system.

-------------------------------

Sarnia council has approved a $2.1 million increase to Sarnia's sewer upgrade project.

Engineering and Operations General Manager David Jackson said it's needed for construction of the pumping station.

Crews encountered an undocumented artesian well when they dug a shaft 40 feet below surface last October.

It flooded the pit and led to project delays while crews worked to decommission it.

Service counters at Sarnia City Hall could reopen as early as next month.

The city's senior management team is working on a phased-in plan for in person services after the expiry of Step Three on Monday, August 16, 2021.

Unless otherwise directed by the province or Lambton Public Health, residents will be welcomed back on the first floor of city hall with capacity limited and physical distancing measures in place.

The public will be required to make appointments if they wish to visit the second or third floor.

-----------------------------

Sarnia council has granted a seasonal noise bylaw exemption to Paddy Flaherty's Irish Pub for the next three years.

The pub can crank its live music until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights in the summer from this Friday, July 16, to September 20, 2023.

--------------------------------

Sarnia council has approved a noise bylaw request from Reverlee Entertainment.

A music festival is planned at Canatara Park from Friday July 22, 2022 to Saturday July 23, 2022.

Lake Chipican Drive will also be closed between the two roundabouts in Canatara Park the evening before the festival to the Sunday after.

----------------------

Sarnia Arena will be renamed Pat Stapleton Arena.

Sarnia council approved the design concept as proposed by the committee Monday.
