Man found passed out behind the wheel faces trafficking charges

A 34-year-old Georgetown man faces 19 criminal charges after Sarnia police blocked the vehicle he was in Thursday afternoon.

Officers responded to a call in the area of Capel and Admiral Street around 4 p.m. July 1.

A witness said they were concerned that a driver had been slumped over the wheel of a vehicle that was still running and in drive for 20 minutes.

Officers arrived to find a car sitting between the southbound vehicle and bicycle lanes of Capel Street.

Police recognized the driver, who was still unconscious, as an individual known to flee police.

So, they parked one cruiser in front of the vehicle and another behind it and proceeded to break the driver's side window to check on the individual.

The accused woke up, saw the officers and accelerated to flee, pushing the cruiser parked in from nearly two meters.

He was then forcefully removed from the vehicle, arrested and charged with impaired driving, resisting a peace officer and dangerous driving.

Thankfully, police say no one was injured.

A search of the vehicle discovered $6,670 in cash, drug paraphernalia, 156.8 grams of fentanyl, 34.8 grams of cocaine, and 6.8 grams of crystal methamphetamine.

The combined amount of controlled substances and cash seized was estimated at close to $90,000.

The accused was taken to hospital for a medical assessment before being transferred to Sarnia Police Headquarters.

Brent Matthew Sproule faces 12 counts of operation of a conveyance while prohibited, dangerous operation of a conveyance, operation of a conveyance while impaired and refusal to comply with blood demand.

He was also charged with obstructing a peace officer, and possession for the purpose of trafficking fentanyl, cocaine and methamphetamine.

Sproule was held for a bail hearing and remanded into custody.

He's scheduled to appear in court again Monday, July 5.
