Olympic champ Derek Drouin withdraws from Tokyo trials

Derek Drouin has pulled out of the Tokyo Olympic trials.

The Corunna native and Olympic gold medal winner posted on Instagram telling fans that over the past couple of days, he and his team have decided that it is not in his best interest to jump this weekend.

The high-jumper said his body did not recover the way he had hoped during his two week quarantine, following a recent competition schedule in Europe.

The post went on to say that Drouin has not made any decisions at this time regarding the rest of his season or future with the sport.

"Although this obviously isn’t how I expected my Olympic journey to end, I am beyond excited to watch my Canadian teammates write their own stories, both this weekend at trials and next month in Tokyo. Good luck to everyone competing!"

Drouin made it to the top of the podium at the Rio Olympics in 2016 with a season-best jump of 2.38 m (7.8 ft).

The 31-year-old's impressive resume includes first-place finishes at the Commonwealth Games, Pan AM Games, and World Championships, as well as bronze at the 2012 London Olympics.
