The city is working on a plan to help dance, recreational, fitness and other businesses that are not permitted to open indoors until phase three of Ontario's reopening plan.
Sarnia council supported a motion from Bill Dennis Monday, which will give the groups free access to outdoor municipal areas for the remainder of the year.
"Our community needs our help now, more than ever," said Dennis. "As we all try to recover from the worldwide pandemic, many recreational businesses continue to be paralyzed, given continued closures."
Access will be reserved through the city once proof of liability insurance is received and strict public safety guidelines will have to be followed.
"Given many don't have their own outdoor space, by us allowing these businesses to access our outdoor municipal areas and parks for the permitted group sessions, this will throw them a small lifeline," he said.
Councillor Dennis expects it will also help citizens with their mental and physical health.
Councillor Mike Stark opposed the motion.
"If businesses charge for services, they should pay a fee," said Stark. "I'm not prepared to ask taxpayers to provide rent-free business platforms. There are options available to businesses, such as Valley Axe, for rent. There are outdoor facilities that are available to businesses. I suggest that businesses attempt to secure those."
Ontario is expected to enter phase two of its reopening plan at the end of June, which will let fitness and dance studios host outdoor classes with up to 25 people.
The province isn't expected to enter the third stage until over 70 per cent of adults have one COVID-19 vaccine and 25 per cent are fully vaccinated.
