Random attack involving suspected pellet gun outside Sarnia hospital

A man accused of shooting a suspected pellet gun at a random woman outside Bluewater Health is facing several charges.

Sarnia police were called to the emergency doors of the hospital at around midnight Wednesday.

Police said the woman, who was uninjured, was waiting for someone she had brought into the hospital when the suspect drew what was believed to be a firearm, pointed it at the victim and fired several times.

The victim was able to run back inside while the suspect fled the scene on his bicycle.  Police said no damage was reported to the building.

At around 12:40 a.m., police located the accused in the area of London Road and Russell Street and attempted to place him under arrest.

Police allege the suspect resisted, fled on his bicycle and later attempted to strike an officer in the face, before being placed in handcuffs.

Corey Michael Popp, 34, is charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, resisting a peace officer and assaulting of a peace officer.

Popp was being held in custody awaiting a bail hearing.

Police were unable to locate the weapon described by witnesses and continue to investigate the incident.  If anyone does come across a firearm in the area of Norman Street, Russell Street, London Road, or in the surrounding area, they are asked not to the touch the weapon but rather contact the Sarnia Police Service at 519-344-8861, extension 0.

Cst. John Sottosanti said a pellet gun can absolutely still injure someone.

"Just because it's a pellet gun, doesn't necessarily mean that they can't injure somebody.  The fact of the matter is some of them are actually restricted due to the fact that they are able to travel at higher speeds, closer to the speeds of a real bullet.  So that would cause significant damage and injury."
