LPH hopes to administer 30K COVID vaccines in June

Lambton's Medical Officer of Health hopes to administer 30,000 COVID vaccine doses in June, which he says would be a monthly record.

Dr. Sudit Ranade said over 77,500 doses of vaccine have been given locally, mostly first shots.

Around 64 per cent of local adults over 18 have received one dose, the same goes for about three per cent of youth aged 17 and under.

Meanwhile, the one day COVID-19 mass immunization clinic, held Monday at Clearwater Arena, was a success.

Over 1,000 high-risk healthcare workers were given their second doses of vaccine, and Dr. Ranade said it ran smoothly.

He said the facility is prepped and ready to go, and he expects the space to be utilized more during the month of June. It follows the model of the successful clinic at Point Edward Arena.

"The uses (for the Clearwater Arena clinic) would be the same," said Dr. Ranade. "We would still try to run sort of a full-scale clinic there because it's really designed as a high volume clinic. So, if there are times when we might not be using the full capacity of Point Edward, for example, then we'd transition over to using some capacity at Clearwater."

Dr. Ranade said opening a second vaccination site will take some pressure off of the 80-plus crowd getting second doses.

"When we did the first round of doses, we started with the 90-plus and 80-plus folks," he said. "Bringing a lot of those folks into a high volume centre with lots of walking is not a great idea in order to meet their average mobility needs. So, as we transition to making sure they get second doses, there's an opportunity to open up some capacity in other places while we divert existing capacity to meet overflow needs."

Dr. Ranade said vaccine call centre volumes are very high this week, and he's urging everyone to be patient.

Those aged 80 and up, and those who received their first vaccine before March 17, are now eligible to book appointments for second doses.
