Million dollar road work season underway

Road work will be a common sight across the City of Sarnia this summer.

Council is being asked to accept a $1.1 million tender from Cope Construction and Contracting Inc. Monday, for a variety of asphalt resurfacing projects.

Mayor Mike Bradley said the condition of secondary roads is always a topic for discussion.

"One of the number one complaints we always receive as a city is the paving of roads, and this is the largest amount of money we've spent as a city trying to get to those secondary streets throughout the urban part of the community," said Bradley.

He said they've devoted a lot of the paving money to the rural part of the community, like Waterworks Road, in the last number of years.

"In this case, we've turned the spotlight back on those secondary roads. Like Denmark Street, like Ross Avenue, like Kintail, and again, the largest expenditure we've ever made as a city on paving."

The contract will address:

• Denmark Street (Sweden Street to Norway Avenue) • Spartan Avenue (Errol Road East to Kemsley Drive) • Kemsley Drive (Colborne Road to Indian Road) • Giffel Road (Michigan Avenue to Errol Road) • Lorne Crescent (Wellington Road to Lansdowne Avenue) • Ross Avenue (Siddal Street to Carlton Place) • Mack Avenue (Confederation Street to Ontario Street) • Kintail Street (Mack Avenue to Palmerston Street South)

Cope Construction and Contracting was previously awarded a nearly $2 million contract for asphalt resurfacing at the beginning of May.

Sarnia council is also being asked to approve a $1.5 million dollar tender, submitted by Sevcon Paving, for required road improvements along Blackwell Sideroad for the oversized load corridor project.

The upgrades between Confederation Line and Churchill Line are needed to ensure the road can safely accommodate the loads and required turning radius.
