Insurance company donates $300K to help Lambton College international students

A $300,000 pledge will give a boost to Lambton College's large international student population.

Markham-based guard.me International Insurance is putting the money towards scholarships and services for students who have come to Canada to pursue their education.

College Foundation Director Marc Guilbeault said just like for any student, the cost of post-secondary education can be a barrier.

"And these students are travelling and coming to us from all over the world. So the cost in order to get to Canada and Sarnia is very expensive, so any financial support is a big help."

In March, the college awarded entrance scholarships to 10 incoming international students who will be joining Lambton College at its Sarnia campus.

"At all of our campuses around the world, we have 12,000 international students," said Guilbeault. "Here, at the Sarnia-Lambton campus, the main campus, we have 792 international students for our winter term, and we're hoping for fall, to double that number."

Guilbeault said the students who come to Sarnia-Lambton certainly help drive the local economy.

"Over 93 per cent of our international students that are surveyed at both post-graduate at six months as well as 12 months, over 93 per cent of them indicate that they would recommend Sarnia-Lambton to live and work in."

The donation from guard.me follows a $425,000 contribution to the Envision Tomorrow Capital and Equipment Renewal Campaign in 2018.
