A Sarnia veteran, one of the last remaining members of the Scottish Regiment, died this week.
Roy Hare was 97.
Mr. Hare was in Europe for battle for a total of six months, starting out in France before making his way through Belgium and into Germany. While in Germany, he was taken as a prisoner of war for 57 days before being freed in April of 1945.
He made several trips back to Europe for Second World War memorial events including the 75th anniversary of D-Day in France in 2019.
The longtime Sarnia resident received France's highest bravery decoration in 2016, the National Order of the Legion of Honour.
Sarnia Legion Branch 62 mourned the loss of Roy Hare with a post on Facebook that read: "WW2 Veteran, Legion 62 best dancer and all around gentleman, Roy Hare, has passed away. The Legion mourns as we have lost a great friend in our community."
On Remembrance Day in 2020, pipe band members paid their respects to Mr. Hare with a performance at his residence.
